The Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant is a limited company, with Holding Slovenske elektrarne as the sole partner. The company is under the management of the Director.
The company's principal activity is generation of electricity and district heating energy.
With
an installed power of 684 MW, the Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant
generates, on average, one third of the energy in the country, and in
periods of crisis, it can cover more than one half of the national demand. The average annual electricity production ranges from 3,500 and 3,800 GWh. The average annual production of thermal energy used for district heating in the Šaleška dolina valley amounts to 400-450 GWh.
To
achieve the above-mentioned annual production of electricity and
thermal energy, the power plant uses between 3.5 and 4.2 million tonnes
of coal and approximately 60 Sm3 of natural gas.
The results of operational readiness of our generators can be compared to the best European thermal power plants.

According
to the adopted strategic development plan of the Šoštanj Thermal Power
Plant, the 600 MW Unit 6 will gradually replace the technologically
obsolete and economically inefficient Units 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
It is a
project of national importance which has been included in the Resolution on the National Energy Programme and the Resolution on the National Development Projects for the 2007-2023 Period adopted by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia on 12th October
2006 and amended in the year 2008. In spring 2009, it was also included
in the Green Paper.
Unit
6 will consume approximately 30 percent less coal for the same amount
of generated energy, resulting in significantly lower total emissions
into the environment. At the same amount of generated energy, 30 percent less CO2 will be emitted into the environment from Unit 6 compared to the present units of the Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant.
With
the construction of Unit 6, we will reduce the level of environmental
pollution, improve the quality and energy efficiency, and provide an
opportunity for the power plant to achieve compliance with international
standards on best available technology.
